THELLO JAY is an independent American recording artist, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur.

Born in Anniston, Alabama, and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Thello was introduced to recording by his mother, Vonnie, a vocalist and background singer whose credits include gospel artist Darius Brooks of SDM Inc. He spent hours at her recording sessions as a child. His godfather, Danny Boy Steward, gave him an early look at the demands of a touring artist’s career. Years later, Thello collaborated with both his mother and Danny Boy, bringing two of his earliest musical influences into his work.

In high school, filmmaker Steve Zimmerman connected Thello with BNF, Swagg Dinero, and the late Lil Jojo. By sixteen, he had sold out a self-promoted show, sold music directly, and built an audience through grassroots promotion.

Around 2009, Thello began a three-year run of releases shaped partly by his creative circle at Rich South High School. Those relationships led to released and unreleased collaborations with Azae Production, Dreezy, and Rello Dreamer. Promoter Von “Chef Vino” Harris discovered him performing at a local event and later became his manager, guiding his development and promotion. At the same event, Thello met DJ O-Zone, with whom he later recorded his debut mixtape, His Era, at Classick Studios in Chicago. The XXL Midwest Tour and coverage during hip-hop’s blog era followed. Through mutual friends, he later met Roc Nation’s Lenny S. in New York City. Thello remembers Lenny’s candid take on “Take the Throne” as one of the meeting’s funniest moments.

Alongside music, Thello pursued interests in technology, business, data, and how systems work. While less publicly active as an artist, he continued making music and earned degrees in Marketing and Data Science. He later founded Virgil Holding LLC and MSN Dynamics™, continuing his music industry work through VMG.

In 2022, Thello returned to public releases with the Sleep on Myself EP, recorded in two weeks and released the following week. That pace reflected his approach across music, technology, and business: develop an idea, build it, and bring it to life.
